Natural Alternative to Sugar – Stevia
One day last week a man comes in and tells me that his doctor wants him to stop using sugar and switch to an all natural sweetener because of health issues. He handed me the paper he was holding. The doctor had written down the name of the sweetener that comes in little yellow packets (it sounds like plenda). I couldn’t believe it. I told him that what he wrote down was junk. I told him how it contained aspartame which I call a drug and is known to cause side effects such as headaches, dizziness, urinary tract infections, leg numbness and cramping, fatigue, memory loss; the list goes on and on.
I brought him down the baking aisle and showed him stevia. I told him that stevia is natural, made from a plant. No other ingredients, no sugar, no drugs, just an extract from a very sweet plant and has no calories. He was also interested in the fact that stevia could be used by diabetics. The best thing, I told him, is that stevia has no side effects. He bought NuNaturals stevia because that is the one I happen to use. I asked him to come back to tell me how he likes it. I hope he does.
I use stevia instead of sugar in everything I need sweetened. It is great in coffee, tea, oatmeal, and smoothies. My husband made the best brownies ever and even made icecream with stevia (which he has to perfect still).
It is hard because stevia is so much sweeter than sugar, and, with baking recipes you have to add fiber so cakes and cookies rise and actually look like what they’re suppose to. NuNaturals has a product that you can use in baking recipes which contains stevia and fiber. I love it. You’ll love it.
